In Singhala, Astrology is called Jyotishya. Jyoti means light and jyotishya means science of light. Hence, we can shine this light into the darkness of life.

Darkness refers to the not knowing of your life, and light to insight. Hence, through Astrology or Jyotishya, you can get insights into your life.

Astronomy

Astrology uses the help of Astronomy, which is the study of celestial objects, planets and stars.

Map of Your Life

Your birth happens at a specific date, at a specific time and at a specific location. Hence, we can use your birth day, birth time and location of birth to create your horoscope or birth chart, which is the map of your life.

Astrology Systems

Chinese Astrology

Chinese Astrology assigns a zodiac sign to one whole year. For example, whoever who is born in the year 2000 will have the same zodiac sign. However, we know that we are all different. Even though we are born in the same year, we are not going to be similar. Hence, it’s not a favorable system of Astrology.

Western/Tropical Astrology

Western Astrology uses a Solar based system. i.e. which sign is your Sun in.

Sri Lankan/Indian/Vedic/Sidereal Astrology or Jyotishya

Sri Lankan Astrology looks at your Ascendant (Asc) / Rising sign/ Lagna, and also uses a Lunar based system. i.e. which sign is your moon in.

What is the Most Accurate System of Astrology?

Are the planet placements different in Western Astrology vs Sri Lankan Astrology?

The planet placements of a Western Astrology birth chart vs a Sri Lankan Astrology birth chart can be different. However, I am here to say that, in reality, that can’t be, because you are born at one particular moment and have one date of birth, one time of birth and one location of birth. Hence, the planets can’t be in two signs but be placed only in one sign.

What accounts for this difference in Western Astrology and Sri Lankan Astrology?

According to Western Astrology, the stars are static. However, everything in this world is in motion, called the Precession of the Equinox. Precession means movement and Equinox refers to celestial objects, planets, stars and constellation. Sri Lankan Astrology takes this into account.

However, we are not able to see the movement of the stars in a life time because they move really slowly. Hence, Western Astrology takes into account that the starting reference point of the zodiac to always be Aries. However, due to the Precession of the Equinox, the stars are moving, which Sri Lankan Astrology takes into account, causing the starting reference point to change signs.

Precession of the Equinox

There are 12 signs of the Zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

1. When we place the zodiac in a circle of 360°, and divide it equally by 12, we get 30°. This means, each sign is assigned 30°. With the precession of the Equinox, the stars remain in one sign for 30°. 360° / 12 = 30°

2. For the precession of the Equinox and starting reference point to shift 1, it takes 72 years. 1° --> 72 years

3. Hence, for the stars to remain in 1 sign of 30, it takes 2160 years.

72 years * 30° = 2160 years

4. For the Precession of the Equinox to go through all of the 12 zodiac signs, it takes 25920 years. 2160 years * 12 = 25920 years

Now you can understand why the stars appear as fixed: we are not going to be living 2160 years to see this change that is not easily detectable.

What is the Most Accurate System of Astrology?

Western Astrology uses fixed stars while Sri Lankan Astrology aligns with the precession of the Equinox. We can create our birth chart or horoscope with our birth details. This gives us the planet placements in the signs. However, when we compare the Western Astrology chart with the Sri Lankan Astrology chart, we see the planet placements are mostly different, which shouldn’t be because we are born at one time and the planets could only have one position. Hence, the question we need to be asking is ‘which system is the most accurate’.

The system of Astrology practiced in Sri Lanka and India, also called Vedic Astrology, Sidereal Astrology or Jyotishya is the most accurate system of Astrology because in reality we need to take into account of the Precession of the Equinox.

Evidence

Evidence 1: Astrological Age

2000 years ago, the starting reference point was Aries. At that point, Western and Sri Lankan Astrology aligned. However, Western Astrology continued to use starting reference point as Aries. And Sri Lankan Astrology took this shift into account. Right now, the starting reference point has shifted from Aries to Pisces, as this shift happens backwards.

This change of starting reference point marks the revolution of humanity. This revolution of humanity is also evidence that the starting reference point of the zodiac changes. 2000 years ago, when the starting reference point was Aries, it was the age of Aries, ruled by the planet of passion and war – Mars. This was the time of the ancient cultures including Egyptian, Greek, Trojan, Rama in India and Ravana in Sri Lanka. And the energy of these people can be reflected by the planet and sign.

When the starting reference point changed to Pisces, there was a revolution of humanity. Pisces, being rules by Jupiter is about wisdom, spirituality and the reality of life. This revolution of humanity marks the birth of religion. Pisces having the sign of the fish, there were carvings of the fish during this time. Example, in churches. We are now living in the age of Pisces.

Are you wondering what’s next? After 2000 years from the beginning of Pisces, the starting reference point will shift into the next sign before Pisces – Aquarius. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, the planet of Karmas (intentional actions) and Vipakas (results of Karmas). Also, it’s ruled by Uranus, the planet of new technology. We can now actually see that happening with the birth of robots and AI.

Personal Development Tip: Embrace Personal Development Amidst Technological Advancements

Even though these machinery and technology helps us, it’s possible that we begin to use less of our minds. For example, I was allowed to use the calculator in one of my mathematic papers for my London O/Ls and A/Ls. However, the local system of education in my country did not allow that. And I realize that I had become dependent on the calculator and used less of my mind to solve mathematics in comparison to those who didn’t use the calculator.

Furthermore, the current technology makes it possible for AI to create a video script for you. Additionally, you can read the script by looking at it and not at the camera or webcam and then later while editing, fix it to look like you are looking at the camera or webcam. This too is an example of technology using which you depend on a script and not allow yourself to be present in the moment and allow your thought to flow freely and naturally through you. As a result, I choose to not to use this technology in my videos but stay present in the moment and allow my thoughts to flow out as I am looking at you…

As a final example, look at your parent’s and grandparent’s generation. They were hard working and used more of their physical bodies such as for washing clothes. They didn’t depend on a washing machine but used their hands, which helped them to maintain a healthy physical body. That is to say, they didn’t have to schedule time for exercise but they would get their exercise while they lived life doing day to day tasks. At the current day and age, the lack of movement is one reason why we see an increase in dis-ease in our physical bodies.

Hence, I encourage you to be active, use your physical bodies and don’t depend on machinery entirely.

Evidence 2: Birth Chart Comparison

At the present moment, if we compare the Western Astrology chart with the Sri Lankan Astrology chart, we will see that the planet placements in the signs in Sri Lankan Astrology chart are one sign behind that of the Western Astrology chart. For example, if your sun is in Gemini in Western Astrology, your Sun will be one sign behind in the Sri Lankan Astrology chart. i.e. in the sign before Gemini, which is Taurus.

I hear you if you are saying that you resonate so much with your Western zodiac sign. My friend is a Gemini Sun in Western Astrology and I agree he has Gemini energy in him. However, the reason he has a lot of the Gemini energy is not because his Sun is in Gemini but because one of his major positions in Sri Lankan Astrology, his Ascendant/rising sign/lagna is Gemini, accounting for his Gemini energy. In fact, his Sun is not in Gemini, it’s in Taurus.

It’s also possible that you can have the same planet in the same sign in both horoscopes provided that the planet is at the very end of a sign and is about to transit into the next sign in your Western chart. Hence, in the Sri Lankan chart, the planet would still be in the same sign.

This too shows why your Sri Lankan chart planets are one sign behind your Western chart. In this current day and age, Western Astrology uses the starting reference point to still be Aries while Sri Lankan Astrology takes into account that the starting reference point to have shifted one sign behind Aries. This is the reason for the difference in the 2 systems of Astrology. Additionally, another 2000 years into the future, we’ll notice a difference of 2 signs behind in the Sri Lankan chart compared to the Western chart.

Evidence 3: Sky Map

Furthermore, I’d like to share one more way you how you can see that the starting reference point has changed. A sky map app will show you the planet placements: their direction in reference to you or Earth and the star sign they are in.

Recently, I noticed that those following Western Astrology stated that Pluto has transited from Capricorn to Aquarius. However, the sky map app shows you that Pluto is still in Capricorn, the sign before Aquarius, as used by those following Vedic Astrology. This too shows us that the precession of Equinox has shifted and Sri Lankan Astrology is accurate.
